Verbund Edling Hydro Power Station

Edling is an 87MW hydro power project. It is located on Drau river/basin in Carinthia, Austria. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1959 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1962.

Villach Town

Villach is the seventh-largest city in Austria and the second-largest in the federal state of Carinthia. It is an important traffic junction for southern Austria and the whole Alpe-Adria region. As of January 2018, the population is 61,887.

Together with other Alpine towns Villach engages in the Alpine Town of the Year Association for the implementation of the Alpine Convention to achieve sustainable development in the Alpine Arc. In 1997, Villach was the first town to be awarded Alpine Town of the Year.

Project Details

The Bleiberg Project comprises 116 claims totalling an area of 65.8km2, located approximately 130km south of the city of Salzburg in southern Austria within the eastern Alps region of Europe.

The Bleiberg Project is situated in a raised valley west of the city of Villach in Southern Austria, which separates the Dobratsch mountain to the south from the Gailtaler Alps in the north. The Bleiberg property is one of four major lead-zinc deposits associated with the Periadriatic Lineament, a regional suture stretching from Italy through Austria and Slovenia to Romania. These deposits are hosted in Triassic lagoonal sediments.

The Bleiberg Region of Austria is a historical lead-zinc mining area, which has been working at an industrial scale from the 16th century until 1992. The mine produced zinc, lead and germanium intermittently until its closure. Bleiberg region has been a producer for approximately 700 years and was mined underground over 18km of strike length with approximately 1100km of workings and numerous shafts. Academic papers on this famous mine site are abundant. Per general scientific consensus, in 700 years of mining some 3 million tonnes of metal have been produced, with an average grade of 5% zinc, 1% lead and 200 ppm Germanium1.
